After the "echo" was over, they said the results would be available the following day. When I explained to the nurse that we lived far away, she was kind enough to get it bumped up to 5pm that day. We went shopping and grabbed some food while we waited for 5 o'clock to roll around. I sat and waited at the lab for another half hour before the doctor signed the results and they were given to me. The cardiologist let us come in that day, even though it was almost 6pm. He looked at the results and explained that our son has two holes in his heart. One is small and will likely close on its own. The other one is larger and is less likely to close without intervention. He explained that the heart has two halves that pump blood: one half pumps it to the lungs to be oxygenated, and the other pumps it to the rest of the body. With a hole between the two compartments, the oxygen-rich blood can mix with the other blood and be pumped back to the lungs, where it has just been.
Our cardiologist called up one of his doctor friends while we were sitting there and asked his opinion. The two concluded that, since our son is growing normally and doesn't show other symptoms of lacking oxygen, we could wait a few weeks and see if anything changes. He wants us to come in again in the beginning of September. In the mean time, he told us to be extra cautious to sanitize everything and not let him be in contact with a lot of other people, to keep him from getting any kind of infection. This can be difficult, since everyone thinks he is cute and wants to hold him. The doctor said we should pray that God would heal our son's heart so he doesn't need surgery.
