We happen to live across the street from a very charismatic church. which makes no effort to keep their noise to themselves...even when the evening service goes until 10 or 11pm. They must have had a revival one weekend, because there were lots of people, long services, loud music, and lots of screaming preachers. One wonders what kind of a message that sends to the unsaved that live nearby, (1 Cor 14:23) but that is a subject for a different day. Neighbors often like to share their music with the whole neighborhood via a large car sound system, which are plentiful here. All the noise reaches your ears better while you are indoors because the houses are not as insulated as in the US.
Finally, to top things off, this year is the year of Fifa World Cup soccer and the tournament is taking place in various cities in Brazil. About the only competition in the US that is comparable to it and that causes people to throw parties to watch it is the Super Bowl. There are games every day, but only on the days of the Brazil games do things get crazy. Such days are comparable to a mixture between a Super Bowl and the 4th of July. About an hour before the game, everyone stops working and watches the game. The hour before is when the random blowing of vuvuzelas (google it), shooting off of firecrackers, and other celebration starts. When Brazil makes a goal, you can hear sounds of celebration in the whole town, complete with many firecrackers. After Brazil won their first game, people were driving around honking their horns constantly for a couple of hours. Today happens to be the day of yet another Brazil game. We are afraid to see what would happen if they lost the game. We shall see what the outcome is.
