On the trip, I stayed with some friends who enjoy a good game of soccer. They called up enough people to get a good game going. One of the guys who came had spent some time in Brazil, so during a water break I approached and asked him if he spoke Portuguese. We talked for a while in Portuguese and he seemed pretty excited to find another person speaking it, which is probably hard to find in Fort Collins, Colorado. We ended up talking about disc golf and decided to play a round the next day after he finished working. This story reminds me of the opportunity that having commonality can present. We went disc golfing with him the next day, which was entertaining. Our conversation didn't get very deep or spiritual, and I don't think he is a believer, but I can imagine it would be easy to get to know him well if I lived there. Maybe I should remember how easily relationships can be built out of merely a common interest or experience, and use it to develop relationships, when otherwise it may be hard to make friends quickly.
Have a great Memorial Day!
