The first semester of Linguistics was all classroom learning. We analyzed things on paper from samples of language data that other people had gathered or simple data sets they made up for practice in analyzing them. Now we will all go to Oklahoma and live there for 7 weeks. During that time we will get to know some Cherokee language speakers and meet with them daily to obtain words and phrases in Cherokee. After gathering the data, we will need to do a write-up describing the sound system of the language, as well as the grammatical structure. This is much more similar to the task I will be doing eventually, as it deals with real people and involves recording my own language data. It will be a challenge and I would appreciate your prayers as I prepare to take the gospel to those who don’t have it in their own language.
I am now one day away from beginning the trek to Oklahoma, where I will finish my Linguistics training. This is the part that has been most intimidating to me ever since I signed up for the Linguistics program, but most students who have completed it say that it is the best part.

AuthorWe are normal people who believe that God would have us serve Him in Brazil. We are saddened by the existence of people who do not have access to the gospel due to their location and language. We want to live among such a people group and plant a church among them, shepherding the believers as they grow to maturity. Archives
