Creation in Six Days
Many people object to the teaching that God created the universe in six literal 24 hour days. By researching things like the number of years given in genealogies of the Bible, some scholars believe the world is about 6,000 years old. The only reason I can see for someone to reject six literal days of creation is because they believe the world is older than that, and the only place left to put those years is at the very beginning. This is really an attempt to force secular evolutionary ideas into the Bible, because the Scripture does not require an old earth. This does not mean that everyone who does this believes that we descended from ape-like creatures, although some might. Some theorize that God didn't mean a literal day, that each day represents a long period of time or that there were gaps between the days. I want to challenge this thinking by asking: does this result from a plain reading of the text or is it just an attempt to re-interpret the Bible based on certain 'scientific' claims? From a plain reading of the Bible, I see God making it clear that these are intended to be ordinary days. With each day, He included the phrase "the evening and morning were the (whichever) day". Exodus 20:11 says, "For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them." This does not hint at long periods of time at all, but mere 24 hour days.
